Demaryius Thomas makes camper's weekend

Demaryius Thomas's West Laurens football camp was part of an amazing sports weekend for one central Georgia boy.

Damien Johnson is from Rentz, Ga., in Laurens County. Dublin hosted a special basketball game for Damien Friday night. Johnson then met his hero, Demaryius Thomas, Saturday morning. After that, Rooms From the Heart, from Macon, decked Damien's room out in sports gear Saturday night.

Former West Laurens athlete selected in MLB Draft

Day three of the MLB Draft saw two Mercer Bears get selected by big league franchises.

The Chicago Cubs picked junior third baseman Chesny Young in the 14th round. Two rounds later, Young's teammate and senior pitcher Brandon Barker was drafted by the Atlanta Braves.

The Cubs get a hot bat in Chesny Young. He had a .401 average and 105 hits as a sophomore, before leading the team with a .348 average as a junior. Young also finished second on the team in hits with 71 this season.

MGSC invited to join Southern States Athletic Conference

Middle Georgia State College announced Tuesday they had received an invitation to join the Southern States Athletic Conference.  The invitation was extended from the SSAC Council of Presidents meeting held in Montgomery, Ala. that day.   It's the second part of the college's transition to four-year athletics, having joined the NAIA in April.

Said MGSC Athletic Director Charles Mullis in a statement "I am very excited by this news and what it will mean for our student-athletes and our coaches.  We will be playing against the best teams the NAIA has to offer and it is a testament to the strength of our athletic program and its storied past that such a prestigious conference wants us to join. "

Sport Fencing growing at high school and middle school levels

Many parents and educators across the U.S. are coming to realize the benefits to students of Olympic Sport Fencing.  Sport fencing has been a small but ever present sport in America since the 19th century.  Usually, and erroneously, associated with the privileged class, it has found little place at large in the ball dominate sports arena in America.  However, that view has been changing rapidly over the 25 years.  The U.S. has grown steadily in world prominence including generation of World Champions and Olympic Gold and Silver medalist.  This growth is attributed with broader media coverage but also with a concerted effort by coaches and fencing enthusiast to promote this exciting sport at the middle school and high school levels around the country.  This moves fencing out from the traditional private salles (clubs) and college environments so as to make it accessible to everyone who is interested.

MGSC to join National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics

Middle Georgia State College will join the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics this fall.

The NAIA formally extended the invitation Monday, April 14, during its annual convention of member schools. It's a major step for Middle Georgia State, a bachelor's degree-granting institution moving toward university status.
