Poll Gives Barrow 6-Point Lead Over Anderson
Politics

A poll conducted by a Georgia liberal activist group gives Congressman John Barrow a 6-point lead over his Republican challenger.

The BetterGeorgia poll interviewed more than 1,300 likely voters statewide and 450 in Barrow's 12th Congressional District.

In that race, they said 48 percent are certain to vote for Barrow and 42 percent for Lee Anderson.

The 12th District results have a 4.6-point margin of error. That means pollsters are 95 percent confident that Barrow's support is between 43 and 52 percent and that Anderson's vote is between 38 percent and 47 percent.

That means Barrow is probably leading -- but not necessarily.

When "leaners" are factored in, the poll puts Barrow at 50 percent, Anderson 44 percent, with 6 percent completely undecided.

Barrow, a Democrat, is fighting to win a fifth term in Congress in his redrawn district. His race has drawn national attention from national media that describes Barrow as the last white Democrat in the Deep South.

The district includes Laurens, Wheeler, Telfair and Treutlen counties.

Statewide, the poll reports that Mitt Romney leads President Barack Obama by 7 points, 52 percent to 45 percent.

Those statewide numbers have a 2.6 percent margin of error.

The poll also gives a mixed picture of support for Ballot Question 1, which would let a state board approve local charter-school applications.

When read the ballot question, voters supported the state constitutional amendment by 52 percent to 40 percent. 8 percent were undecided.

When read a description explaining that the state board could override the local board of education, the response was much closer: 45 percent in favor, 44 percent opposed. 11 percent were undecided.

Executive director Bryan Long describes BetterGeorgia as a progressive advocacy group. They hired 20/20 Insight LLC, a Georgia-based national polling firm, to conduct the survey. 20/20 has worked mainly for Democratic candidates.
