Summer Safety Tips

Hot weather can make us all uncomfortable, and it poses special risks for your dog. Keep the following safety concerns in mind as the temperature rises, and follow our tips to keep your dog cool.

Heat Hazards

If your dog is outside on a hot day, make sure he has a shady spot to rest in. Doghouses are not good shelter during the summer as they can trap heat. You may want to fill a child's wading pool with fresh water for your dog to cool off in.

Never leave your dog in a closed vehicle on a hot day. The temperature inside a car can rise to over 100 degrees in a matter of minutes.

Always provide plenty of cool, fresh water.

Avoid strenuous exercise on extremely hot days. Take walks in the early mornings or evenings, when the sun's heat is less intense.

Try to avoid prolonged exposure to hot asphalt or sand, which can burn your dog's paws.

Take Your Dog to Work Day

June 24 marks "Take Your Dog to Work Day."

The event is sponsored by Pet Sitters International.

They provide seven tips on ensuring you and your pooch have a great day at work together.

1. Check with your colleagues and management before bringing your pet pal.

2. Dog-proof your work space.

3. Consider your dog's behavior. Make sure he is fit to hang out with you at work.

4. Bring a doggie bag. [treats, leash, toys, etc]

5. Plan feeding times in accordance with your work schedule.

6. Not everyone is a dog lover. Make sure you don't pressure others to interact with your dog.

7. Have a back-up plan. Your dog may rather take a half-day and want to go home. Just don't leave your pet in the car.

It's National Adopt a Shelter Cat Month.

What does this mean? You should head over to your local shelter and adopt a cat, at least according to the ASPCA website.

But this also means you can enter the Adopt a Shelter Cat Month Photo Contest. The theme: the Art of the Cat Nap: Photos of Kitty in Unusual Sleeping Spots photo contest!

Check out the low-down on how to enter your photo.

If you have cute kitty photos, of course we want to see them as well. We're just not the ones with the contest.

Tips for Traveling with Your Pet

On a typical warm sunny day, you may find yourself driving your car with the windows down while your dog is peering out the window – wind blowing in his face. This may appear to be harmless however, it is not safe practice.

While we all love to see the shiny nose of a dog sticking out of a car window, the reality is that your pet's eyes could be injured by debris and other dirt in the air. Moreover, a passing squirrel or another dog or cat could prompt your pet to jump out of the window – a serious and often fatal mistake.

Summertime means vacation and road trips with friends and family. Taking your pet along for the ride could make vacation memories all the more special. Here are some tips on traveling with your pet that will help get your vacation off to a great start.
