Dublin-Laurens Tourism Council Announces 2014 Board of Directors

Recently, the Dublin-Laurens Tourism Council confirmed its Board of Directors and Officers for 2014. Appointed by various authorities and organizations across Laurens County, the Board of Directors develops and implements action plans to increase tourist visits to Laurens County, Georgia through promotion, marketing, resource development and enrichment, and promoting investment in local assets, resources, and infrastructure, such as parks, museums, convention centers, historic districts, restaurants, and events to attract potential visitors.

MLK to get new memorial at Ga. State Capitol

ATLANTA (WXIA) -- After more than 80 years as the Georgia State Capitol's most prominent statue, the likeness of 19th century white supremacist politician and newspaperman Tom Watson was quietly removed the day after Thanksgiving.

That prompted some civil rights leaders to ask that it be replaced with a statue of Martin Luther King, Jr.

State Representative Tyrone Brooks (D-Atlanta) even introduced a bill to make it happen.

Former NFL star, Heisman Trophy winner and University of Georgia standout Herschel Walker kicked off his raw talent search in Dublin Saturday. Walker had the idea of showcasing videos of people from small towns and combining it with ecommerce. That means consumers can watch a video online and buy a product at the same time. In turn, the performer can make money.

Herschel Walker hosting contest Saturday in Dublin

Herschel Walker is hosting a talent contest at 3 p.m. Saturday at Theater Dublin, 314 Academy Ave.

The contest, called Herschel's Raw Talent, is open to the public and anyone with "talent," according to a news release from organizers.

Auditions should be two and a half minutes of "raw talent."

First place winner gets $1,000; second place, $500; and third, $250.

Atlanta, GA GeorgiaForward kicks off its second annual Young Gamechangers program on Thursday, January 9 convening 35 of the state’s most promising young leaders in Dublin, Laurens County, with the goal of revisioning the area as a vibrant 21st century community.

“In fulfilling our mission to promote smart policies, thoughtful leadership and deeper civic engagement throughout Georgia, I’m excited to announce the second year of Young Gamechangers,” says Howard Franklin, Executive Director of GeorgiaForward.  “Our participants’ careers span arts & culture, business, finance, education, non-profit, government, law, urban planning and economic development. They have plenty to offer both Georgia and Dublin, Laurens County. We’re excited to be in a community on the precipice of monumental changes, and that offers challenges that can be creatively solved by the state’s next generation of leaders.”

Magouirk named Program Director of the Dublin-Laurens Tourism Council

Dublin-Laurens Tourism Council has named Jessica Magouirk their new Program Director. As Program Director, Magouirk will work in partnership with the Dublin-Laurens Tourism Council, Inc., the Dublin Downtown Development Authority and other community organizations to enhance their tourism and economic development potential. 

"My hope is to build lasting relationships by promoting assets like Theatre Dublin, Market on Madison's farmers market, and Dublin's Visitors Center," stated Magouirk.
