State Patrol: Laurens Firefighter Caused I-16 Crash

Tuesday's crash on I-16 between a fire truck and an 18-wheeler was caused by a Laurens County firefighter, according to the Georgia State Patrol.

The wreck, which sent two people to the hospital late Tuesday, happened near mile marker 42 eastbound just outside Dudley in Laurens County.

The said emergency crews had to shut down at least some lanes. Those lanes reopened early Wednesday morning.

The two trucks caught fire after colliding.

Each driver, 51-year old Terry Lorenzo Williams from Savannah and 24-year old Dustin Edwards of Dublin, were taken to the hospital.

Edwards is a firefighter in Laurens County and was returning to his post at the time of the accident.

David Bryant of the Georgia State Patrol says the accident was caused when Edwards, who was in the right lane, cut across the left lane to try to turn around the median, which caused Williams' tractor trailer to strike the firetruck.
