Recount Possible in 12th District GOP Race
News

ATLANTA (AP) - Republican voters in east Georgia may have to wait another week to learn exactly which candidates will compete in a GOP primary runoff in the 12th Congressional District.

State Rep. Lee Anderson of Grovetown clinched a spot in the Aug. 21 runoff by finishing far ahead of three rivals Tuesday. Unofficial returns show Augusta businessman Rick W. Allen finishing just 570 votes ahead of Wright McLeod, an Augusta attorney.

McLeod said in an e-mail to supporters Wednesday he wants to wait until the official vote is certified next week before deciding his next move. He would be guaranteed a recount if the vote margin between him and Allen remains 1 percent or less.

The new 12th Congressional District includes Laurens, Wheeler, Telfair and Treutlen counties.

The runoff winner will get the Republican nomination to challenge Democratic Rep. John Barrow in November.
