441 Speedway Makes Improvements to Track | News

Three years ago, Justin McCorkel, a Statesboro native, bought the 441 Speedway in Dublin.

This season fans saw big changes come to the property. McCorkel forked out a $100,000 towards improvements. This action has improved the experience for drivers and fans.

The 441 Speedway came to life in 1967. Promotions Manager Willis Wombles says it's stood for twenty years without any major improvements, and that had the dirt showing its age.

Driver Keith Brooks agrees with Wombles that the facility came with some frustrations. Brooks says "Last year, the track was flat and didn't have nearly the banking in it, and the dirt on the track was sandy, and it was hard to get a grip with the tires."

Wombles says an infusion of cash by the owner allowed them to shorten the track by 29 feet, and they also banked up the dirt by twenty degrees and made it 12 feet wider.

The speedway also comes equipped with handicapped parking. They hired a full-time person to work on the track during the week, and fans that used to sit in stands can now enjoy the scenery from bleachers.

The owner of the speedway shop is leasing the building that sits at the entrance of the racetrack, he told us business is good.

As for Justin McCorkel, Wombles says he plans to put even more money into the track next season by creating a tailgating area.

They'll run the American Dirt Series with a $2,000 purse.

Gates open at four, hot laps begin at 8 p.m., and the checkered flag drops on the first races at 8:30.
