A Tale of Comebacks as Royals, Raiders Split Games

For the first time since the two schools were region foes in 2005-06, Bleckley and West Laurens met in basketball action Saturday at the Raiders SaddleDome.  It was a story of comebacks as one team from each school rallied to win.

N'yaia Anderson's 14th point of the first half with three seconds left gave the Lady Royals a 35-18 halftime lead.  Four Lady Raider three-point shots helpd cut the deficit to five going to the fourth.  WL went ahead with 53 seconds left.  One of two Bleckley free throws with eight seconds left cut a two-point deficit to one.  A quick foul, then one of two free throws again mad it a two-point game.  BC's last second shot was short as they lost 66-64.

Anderson finished with 17.  Dewanda Blackshear had 11.  Cam Tillman scored 10.

West Laurens High to Play in Sugar Bowl Halftime Show

West Laurens High School marching band heads west to perform in the Sugar Bowl halftime show in the new year.

They were invited to perform in the Sugar Bowl halftime show along with other high school marching bands in the nation.

They left December 31 and return January 3.

Band booster vice president Deidra Bolyard credits the community's support in the band's fundraisers for their ability to go. 

She says 130 students and about 50 parents will head to New Orleans for the trip. She said some of the trip highlights also include a Riverboat cruise and heading to the aquarium.

"it's going to be a once in a lifetime trip," Bolyard says.

Royals Advance in Antebellum Holiday Classic

A rusty BCHS team took the floor at Baldwin High School Thursday for their first game in the Little Casears Antebellum Holiday Classic.  The Royals last played 12 days ago, winning in Dublin.  Against Cedar Shoals, the Royals trailed by as many as nine  points in the first half.

Six straight points by Rydealous Taylor in the third had what was an eight-point deficit down to two.  In the fourth, Mario Beck scored four quick points with under four minutes remaining to put Bleckley out in front.  The Panthers tied the score at 45 with 1:14 left.  Beck got free under ther goal and layed one off the glass with 4.8 seconds left.

Cedar Shoals just missed a three as BC held on 47-45.  Beck scored 18.  Taylor had 13.  Bleckley plays Thomson High School Friday at 5:30 pm in Milledgeville.

Dewanda Blackshear had one three in the first quarter of Saturday's game in Dublin.  In the fourth, she had five straight points, including a three with 35 seconds left, to give the Lady Royals a 37-36 lead.  Dublin though would win on a tip in with three seconds remaining 37-36.  Blackshear finished with a season high 12. 

Despite a 15-point second quarter by Rydealous Taylor, the Royals found themselves down six to Dublin at halftime.  Seven points by Ken Hughes and six by D'Andre Pitts helped rally BC to a 51-47 lead after three.  Pitts had a three with a little over four minutes left in the game to break a 56-56 tie.  It was part of a 13-6 finish in a 70-63 win.

Taylor finished with 28.  Mario Beck scored 19.  Hughes had all of his 13 points in the second half.  The Lady Royals begin play at the Westside Shootout in Macon Tuesday.  Their first opponent is Howard High School at 4 pm.

Dodge Co. Grappling Indians Compete in West Laurens Invitational

Dodge County Grappling Indians recently competed in the West Laurens Invitational in Dexter, GA.

Several wrestlers turned in impressive performances against a very tough bracket filled with seasoned wrestlers from as far north as Chattooga, GA. and as far south as Flagler Beach, Fl. In all sixteen teams competed in fourteen different weight classes during the two day competition. Turning in the team’s most impressive performance was freshman Aaron Spires wrestling in the 285 lbs weight class. He recorded four pins against only defeat during the tournament.

Winning three out five during the weekend was senior co-captain Michael Wrease, 132 lbs,  and sophomore Tyler Gruben, at 220 lbs. Senior grappler Zach Flagg at 152 lbs and freshman J.T, Shields pulled out two wins against three defeats in two of the toughest weight classes in the tournament. Also competing for the Indians was Brandon Roland, 126 lbs; Shea Powell, 145 lbs; and JaQuan Mann, 160 lbs.
