Five Republicans qualify to challenge Barrow | Families
Five Republican candidates have already qualified to challenge U.S. Rep. John Barrow.
Barrow, a Democrat from Augusta, is seeking a sixth term in Congress. He represents the 12thCongressional District, which includes Treutlen, Laurens, Wheeler.
Through noon Tuesday, these candidates have qualified to challenge him:
Delvis Dutton of Glennville, who owns a well-drilling company;
Diane Vann of Macon, a registered nurse;
Eugene Yu of Augusta, retired;
Rick Allen of Augusta, a general contractor;
John Stone of Augusa, who lists his occupation as "candidate"';
So far, two other Central Georgia congressmen, Austin Scott and Sanford Bishop, do not have qualified opponents.
And six people, all Republicans, have qualified to run for the 10th Congressional District seat. That distirct includes Baldwin, Hancock, Washington and Johnson counties, and Paul Broun is vacating that seat to run for U.S. Senate.
The candidates in the 10th so far are:
Donna Sheldon, Monroe, business owner;
Garry Gerrard, Athens, attorney;
Jody Hice, Monroe, minister;
Mike Collins, Jackson, business owner;
S.Mitchell Swann, Athens, Marine officer;
Stephen Simpson, Milledgeville, retired military officer
Qualifying for state, federal and county positions in Georgia runs through Friday.
The big statewide positions on the ballot this year are the governor's seat and the U.S. Senate position now held by Saxby Chambliss, who is retiring. More than a dozen candidates are expected to qualify for Chambliss's seat.
Gov. Nathan Deal plans to run for re-election, but faces a Democratic challenger, Jason Carter.
All of Georgia's 14 congressional seats are up for re-election this year, along with state representative and state senate seats and statewide offices.
Qualifying for state and federal offices runs through noon Friday. For qualifying hours on local offices, check with your county board of elections.
Georgians will vote in a May 20 primary and decide those seats on Election Day, Nov.4.
