For Denise Brinson, technical education has been a life-changer. Her journey of persevering through challenges—from dropping out of high school to becoming an inspiring instructor at Oconee Fall Line Technical College (OFTC)—has led her to an opportunity to vie for Georgia’s Instructor of the Year title.

OFTC recently named Brinson as its College Rick Perkins Award Winner. This award honors the Technical College System of Georgia’s (TCSG) most outstanding instructors who demonstrate innovation and leadership in the classroom.

Finalists for the award included DeAnne Lindsey, Allied Health Services - Nurse Aide/Healthcare Assisting (North Campus); Lee Radney, T and I/Transportation - Electronics Technology (South Campus); and Leslie Thigpen, Allied Health Services - Practical Nursing (North Campus).

“Technical education has been very instrumental in my own success following personal failure,” said Brinson. “Through my experience I have developed an affinity for students in need. I’ve seen how technical education helps students who may have made poor choices or faced personal failure overcome those challenges and that is a source of inspiration for me.”

As a radiologic technology instructor in OFTC’s Allied Health division, Brinson not only teaches the skills needed to succeed in the field but she shows students how to thrive in life, despite the odds they face.

“I enjoy working with students from all backgrounds and I am thrilled to see them achieve success,” added Brinson.

Brinson will now move on to the regional stage of judging. Selection committees made up of business and industry representatives from colleges within the region will choose three finalists from each of the TCSG’s three regions. Those nine regional finalists will be announced during the Georgia Occupational Award of Leadership and Rick Perkins Award Conference in April.

Beyond that point, the instructor selected as the state winner will carry the title of TCSG’s Instructor of the Year and serve as an ambassador for technical education. To learn more about OFTC visit www.oftc.edu
